The wings of the flightless Romalea microptera are small and are not used for flight. The forewings of all grasshoppers, including Romalea, are heavy and form a pair of wing covers to protect the more delicate hindwings. Those grasshoppers capable of flight use the hindwings, and not the forewings, for flying.

This is the eastern lubber grasshopper, Romalea microptera. Because they are flightless, these large grasshoppers have a very spotty distribution. One person may have them in their lawn in large numbers while their friend who lives three blocks away has never seen them before.
The giant, overt, and clumsy lubber grasshopper is a friend to entomologists and foe to gardeners of the southeastern United States. Bright colors and a care-free nature signal to predators that a noxious chemical cocktail lurks beneath the lubber’s deceptive appearance.

Romalea microptera (Beauvois) Eastern lubber grasshopper Identification. This species is also sometimes known as Romalea guttata (Houttuyn). Despite the confusion in the scientific literature concerning the correct name, Floridians have little trouble rec-ognizing this insect. It is undoubtedly the best-known species of grasshopper in Florida, and one of the most readily rec-ognized insects.
Natural History. Distribution. This native grasshopper is common in the southeastern states from North Carolina to eastern Texas, including the entire peninsula of Florida. Host Plants. Eastern lubber grasshopper has a broad host range. Jones et al. (1987) indicated that at least 26 species from 15 plant families containing shrubs, herbs, broadleaf weeds, and grasses are eaten.
